More than two million men in the UK suffer from impotence, but only about 10% ever have treatment. Many men are too embarrassed to admit that they have the problem and feel they cannot talk to their partners or health professionals. But experts say that if the problems are tackled, sometimes with drugs like Viagra or other treatments, 99% of problems can be alleviated. Dr Mike Kirby, a GP who has a special interest in erectile buying online story viagra (ED) and the problems it causes, has turned to the world of the arts because of his concerns that men need more help. With the help of West End playwright David Eldridge, whose works include “Festen” and “Serving it Up”, Dr Kirby wrote a play examining the delicate issues surrounding impotence, with the aim of promoting a better understanding of the condition. He went on to perform it in front of an audience of GPs at University College, London. Erectile dysfunction Erectile dysfunction affects at least one in every ten men. There are an estimated 2.3 million UK men with impotence, but only 10% of them ever get treatment. Impotence problems increase with age. Impotence was thought to be almost entirely psychological, but physical conditions account for about 75% of cases. The play was a great success and there are hopes to use extracts filmed from it to help educate other professionals about how to handle the sensitive issues. “I talked to the playwright about the issues and explained to him the problems and what issues needed to be brought out to make it easier for people to talk about their problems,” Dr Kirby said. “People don’t like to talk about it. They are ashamed and they can’t talk to anybody. Men on average go between two and 10 years before they can tell anyone that they have a problem.” Physical problem Dr Kirby said that ED was often thought to be psychological, but that for many men it turned out to be linked to a physical condition such as early diabetes, high blood pressure or heart problems. Impotent men can struggle with their emotions He said that in his surgery in Letchworth, in Hertfordshire, if men presented with any of these problems staff had been trained to delicately ask them if they were also having problems with ED. “Doctors asking as part of a check-up can lead to diagnosis being quicker than it otherwise would be.” Dr Kirby said that a failure to talk about the problems would also put strains on erectile dysfunction hormone therapy, causing a rift between partners at a time when support was most needed. “Because the man does not want to initiate anything that could cause himself embarrassment, he often pushes his wife away and stays up late watching the television, rather than going to bed and talking about the problem. “Then the wife starts to worry ‘am I not attractive any more?’ and the whole thing becomes very difficult. I wanted a way to get all these things across and the play seemed the best way to do this.” He said the play had been aimed specifically at doctors because they are also often embarrassed about tackling sexual problems. But he said that the sooner the problem is tackled the better it will be for the patient. “There are some good treatments that can help,” Dr Kirby. “About 10 years ago the treatments were a bit barbaric, such as putting needles into men’s penises, but now with Viagra we can help 99 out of 100 men. “A lot of men just think it is part of getting older, and put up with it, but they can get help.” Suffering in silence Rachel Cummings, from the Chandler Chicco Agency which helped commission the play, said it had focused on the lives of one particular couple. It showed through their relationship how difficult it could be for men to seek help and talk to their families and medics about the problem. “We tried to portray a real-life couple. The man is suffering, but he can’t talk to his wife or his GP, so he just stays up late watching television,” she said. “The relationship with his wife is damaged and he goes to the doctor, but he does not talk to him. He finds it too difficult. “His wife asks him whether he still loves her and so he realises he must go to his GP. He finally talks to him and he gets treatment. “It also helps by showing the GPs what is going on outside of their surgery and the impact something like this can have on a patient’s life.” Ann Tailor, director of the Sexual Dysfunction Medication that cause erectile dysfunction, agreed that the play had been a great initiative. “So many men with ED and their partners are experiencing the emotions portrayed in the play, such as embarrassment, disappointment and anxiety, but even worse there are still men with ED who are not going to their doctor for help and advice,” she said. “This play raised awareness of ED and got doctors and patients talking about it with more ease.” Read source on News - Revealing the drama of impotence

Powerful prescription drugs are available online to anyone with a credit card, an investigation by Scottish trading standards officers has found.

The report claims that many websites are breaking the law when it comes to selling over the internet.

The easy availability of drugs is said to pose a real health threat.

The investigation was led by Dundee Trading Standards officers who set up a false identity with a credit card account and trawled the internet.

They said that slimming pills, soft viagra tablet and drugs claiming to prevent hair loss were easily available.

Protect consumers

However, websites selling Viagra were the most common.

The trading standards officers bought a number of batches from various companies.

They said that in most cases the websites did not comply with rules designed to protect consumers.

The officers also alleged a number of breaches in drugs legislation.

Police in China seized one ton of fake Viagra pills during a series of raids on gangs that were making counterfeit drugs to sell domestically and overseas, state press reported Wednesday.

Aside from the the popular anti-impotency drug, fake versions of Tamiflu, which is being stockpiled around the world for a potential bird flu pandemic, and anti-malarial medications were uncovered, Xinhua news agency said.

Four gangs were busted making the drugs during a two-year crackdown that involved Chinese and US authorities, as well as Interpol, Xinhua said, citing the Ministry of Public Security.

The announcement of the busts come after the former head of China&39;s southern Guangdong province that borders Hong Kong following a raid late last year made in co-operation with US law authorities, Xinhua said.

The Tamiflu raids in May also took place after acting on intelligence from US authorities, resulting in the arrests of 19 suspects. Xinhua said the gang had been trying to sell the Tamiflu into the United States via the Internet.

Few other details of the busts, or the expected trials of the suspects, were revealed.

No reason was given as to why the information on the raids was released so long after the events.

But following the execution of the former head of the drug watchdog, China has ramped up a public relations campaign to reassure the world it is doing all it can to combat the problem of substandard and fake medicines.

The nation also consistently vows to better work with its global partners to end the rampant pirating in China of all kinds of goods, from software and movies to clothing and auto parts. (more̷

Viagra Increases Release Of Key Reproductive Hormone, Study Finds

Science Daily — Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison report this month that sildenafil increases the amount of oxytocin released by stimulation of the posterior pituitary gland, a small structure directly underneath the brain that regulates hormone levels in response to neural signals.

The finding is the first indication of a chemical mechanism through which erectile dysfunction drugs like Viagra may have physical effects besides increasing blood flow to sexual organs, says study author Meyer Jackson, a physiology professor at the UW-Madison School of Medicine and Public Health.

Sometimes called the “love hormone” or “cuddle chemical,” oxytocin plays several important roles in social interactions and reproduction, including triggering uterine contractions and lactation. It is also released during orgasm and has been linked to sexual arousal.

Oxytocin release is regulated by an enzyme that acts like a braking system, limiting hormone release by dampening neural excitation of the cells. This same enzyme, phosphodiesterase type 5, also limits blood flow by contracting the muscles around blood vessels.

In both places, sildenafil works by blocking this enzyme, essentially releasing the brakes, explains Jackson. In blood vessels, relaxing smooth muscle increases blood flow, which corrects erectile dysfunction, and in the posterior pituitary, the cells become more responsive. “The same stimulation will produce more [oxytocin] release.” He says, “I think this is a missing link in terms of trying to sort out the issues around whether there are additional effects of phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors,” which include Viagra, Levitra and Cialis.

The new report was published online Aug. 9 and appears in an upcoming issue of the Journal of Physiology. In the study, the scientists measured oxytocin released from rat pituitaries in response to neural stimulation. When the pituitaries were treated with sildenafil, they responded to the stimulation by releasing three times as much oxytocin as they did without the drug. Importantly, the drug had little if any effect on hormone release in the absence of stimulation, Jackson says. “Erectile dysfunction drugs do not induce erections spontaneously, they enhance the response to sexual stimulation,” he says. “The same thing is happening in the posterior pituitary - Viagra will not induce the release of oxytocin on its own, but it will enhance the amount of release you get in response to electrical stimulation.”

Though he doesn’t think his findings raise any significant safety issues related to Viagra use, he does think it provides strong rationale for studies of additional effects and new potential uses. “A big question raised by our study is, will sildenafil do the same thing to the nerve terminals that release oxytocin [in the brain]”" he says. The cells that supply oxytocin to the pituitary come from a brain structure called the hypothalamus, which also sends hormones throughout the brain.

Though sildenafil’s effects on these pathways are still unknown, work by other researchers has shown that oxytocin-sensitive cells in the brain play a role in the neural control of erectile responses, suggesting that Viagra and its kin may work through multiple channels.

The famous blue pills could have other uses as well. Oxytocin has been linked to the ability to make strong social bonds, while sildenafil was recently shown to improve hamsters’ abilities to adjust the timing of their internal clocks to overcome simulated jet lag. “This is one piece in a puzzle in which many pieces are still not available,” Jackson says. “But it raises the possibility that erectile dysfunction drugs could be doing more than just affecting erectile dysfunction.”

The study was co-authored by Zhenjie Zhang and Vitaly Klyachko. Funding for the research came from the National Institutes of Health.

News - Pfizer workers wait for jobs toll

Staff at drugs giant Pfizer in Kent stayed late after work on Thursday to watch details of how many jobs will be lost in a global business review.

The 3,700 workers in Sandwich and Sittingbourne were among staff watching a worldwide company broadcast.

But they will not find out exactly how many jobs will go in Kent until an announcement on Friday morning.

The company, which makes impotence drug Viagra, has already announced 400 job losses in Sandwich this year.

Biosciences research

It said in January the jobs would be lost over the “next several years”.

Another 200 were shed in April 2003, at what is East Kent’s biggest employer.

Pfizer employs 3,600 people at its European research and development HQ in Sandwich and up to 100 at a biosciences research unit in Sittingbourne.

A two-hour presentation in Sandwich on Friday will explain how the changes affect them.

The current “Adapting To Scale” job cutting exercise follows the company’s takeover of rival drug companies Pharmacia in 2002 and Warner Lambert in 2002.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A new video of Lisa Marie Presley singing “In the Ghetto,” accompanied by her late father, Elvis Presley, will be posted Friday on the AOL Internet site Spinner.com, a company spokesman said Tuesday.

To mark the 30th anniversary of her father’s death, Lisa Marie Presley’s voice was added to the original version of her father’s hit song from 1969. The video duet also features images of her late father.

Spinner.com will post the video along with the transcript of an interview with Lisa Marie Presley, AOL spokesman Kurt Patat said. In the interview, Lisa Marie Presley said the project was emotionally stirring.

“We had two hours to lay down my vocals,” she says. “So the next morning, I heard the rough … and … I’ve never cried when I’ve done anything … ever … but I just lost it when I heard it.

Lisa Marie Presley also talks in the interview about how she was offended to see her father’s song “Viva Las Vegas” used in a Viagra commercial. “I find that revolting,” she said. “Some songs we have no control over. I know we didn’t license that one.”

Proceeds from the new song and video will be used to help build temporary housing for the homeless in New Orleans, she said. The project is to be similar to Presley Place, a 12-unit apartment building for the homeless built in Memphis by Elvis Presley Enterprises Inc. in 2001.

At the time, Elvis Presley Enterprises was owned by Lisa Marie Presley. She sold 85 percent of the company two years ago to CKX Inc., which now controls the worldwide business in marketing Elvis’ name and image.

Elvis Presley died at his Memphis home, Graceland, on Aug. 16, 1977, and thousands of fans are in town this week for the 30th anniversary of his death.

Lisa Marie Presley, 39, is scheduled to attend a concert Thursday in Memphis that will feature her father performing on video, with live support from his former backup singers and band members.

Her most recent album of her own music was “Now What” in 2005, but she said in the interview that she hopes to put out a new album soon.

“I’m definitely going to do it,” she said. “I just have to figure out the right way. I’m on a clean slate right now — I just got off my label (Capitol Records). So I’m figuring out my next route.”
